Product Design

recruiter

Always open to chat about new opportunities.

My name is Crys (pronounced ‘Chris’) and I’m design leader with over 9 years of experience. I’m making impact and growing at Vareto, but would be open to larger companies. I’ve spent the last couple of years working on shipping the best possible experiences under austere measures, and would be interested in working on equally complex problems with more resources.

Here’s a quick intro and a crib sheet about me to see if I’m a fit for what you’re looking for.

About me

I’ve worked at small, medium, and large companies. Some logos inlcude Betterment, Comcast, and Jack Morton. I’ve also done some really great work for companies that you might not have heard of yet.

I’m a generalist with a penchant for systems thinking, but am not afraid to dig into the technical weeds. My spikes are in product thinking, information architecture, prototyping, UI design, and user research. I don’t have a graphic design background but am strong visual designer. I’m particularly passionate about data modeling, data visualization, and working on interfaces for specialists. I’m very good at taking complex flows and making them intuitive. I also spike in communication, collaboration, and autonomy.

I’m baised to action, very communicative, and move very quickly. This can sometimes be overwhelming and distracting to folks. I’m currently working on better calibrating this.

I do mostly IC work, but also really enjoy working with and mentoring other designers. I’m experienced in setting up hiring loops, interviewing, and managing mid to junior level ICs. I’m open to management work if the team and business needs are right.

Domain Experience

  • Consumer (Web and Mobile): Help and Support, My Account, Identity

  • B2B (Web and Mobile): Data, Fintech, FP&A, Healthcare

Accomplishments

✦ At Betterment, I led 0-1 design for 3 projects that were critical to business strategy and set the standard of design to this day. I also created and led several inclusive design initiatives, putting Betterment on the map as a leading thinker in this area for Fintech.

  1. Led design for Advised 401(k), a first to market 401(k) product for Registered Financial Advisors (RIAs). The product resulted in increased AUM and new firms added which increased revenue.

  2. Led design for Automated Custom Portfolios. A powerful upgrade to the existing product that allowed RIAs to have total control over asset management. This project is a key pillar to business strategy and according the the VP of Design, “still holds up to this day”.

  3. Co-Pilot: Automation and quality of life feature for RIAs that customers were known to love.

✦ At Comcast, I led design for self-service features during the company’s massive transition to ‘digital first’ strategy.

  1. Led design for 'Virtual Hold’, a feature that allowed customers to schedule callbacks from customer service agents. This feature resulted in a massive reduction in call center consts.

  2. Co-led design for a remotes pairing flow that enabled customers to self-serve and therefore reduced operating costs.

✦ At Hashboard, I led design for the entire product as well as the brand, culminating in product market fit.

  1. Managed first brand identity (Glean) and helped with launch out of private beta.

  2. Shipped countless features including a tool for building data models and writing SQL, A drag and drop dashboard builder, advanced metrics, content organization, platform re-architecture, custom color configuration, and an advanced data visualization builder. Check out the demo site.

  3. Created and maintained Grain Design System for bespoke and novel interface patterns and controls.

What I’m looking for

I’m somewhat agnostic on the product itself as I have worked across a variety surfaces. My priority is that I am able to work on challenging problems with teams that are design forward. I enjoy learning new things as much as possible and tackling new domains helps me scratch this itch.

Preferred Domains

  • Data Analytics

  • Technical internal tooling

  • Collaborative tools: Figma, Notion, Dropbox, etc.

  • Developer tooling

  • Consumer software for domains that make a complicated subject, simple. Ex: Climate tech, Fintech, Health and Fitness

Hard Requirements

  • Flexible schedule

  • Good healthcare, dental, and vision

  • 401(k)

  • Competitive Salary

  • Mid to large size company

More flexible Requirements

  • Prefer fully remote but willing to consider commuting to Philly, NYC, DC, or Baltimore

  • Would prefer 401(k) match

  • Founding designer roles: I’m open to this if the product, the team, and the benefits are right. Special bonus points for 32 hour / 4 day workweek.
